A criminal suspect wanted for the murder of an Eastern Cape policeman has died in a shootout with officers who were closing in to arrest him.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, said the incident happened in Ngqeleni on Wednesday shortly after noon.
He said the members were acting on a tip-off on the whereabouts of the suspect believed to have been involved in the murder of a policeman in Ngqeleni last week.
Nkholi said when police arrived at a homestead in a village in Ngqeleni, the suspect opened and following the swift and a tactical response by police, the suspect was fatally wounded.
He said a firearm stolen from the murdered policeman was also recovered from the scene.
Nkohli said an inquest docket was opened, while the police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, was also on the scene for further investigation.
