Police are hunting for the assailants who killed six people at a suspected drug post in New Brighton in Gqeberha early on Saturday morning.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said a three-year-old child survived unhurt after the attackers shot and stabbed three men and three women, including the child’s mother.
She said neighbours reported hearing gunshots at a house in Ramba Street between 01:00 and 02:00 on Saturday morning. Naidu said at around 06:45 they went to investigate they found the house next door open.
“Upon further investigation, the bodies of four people, one female, and three males, were found lying in the lounge. Another female was found in the kitchen and one in the bedroom,” she said.
Naidu said the woman in the bedroom had a child with her who was unhurt.
She said all the deceased are aged between 25 and 35 years old and “some of the victims were shot and stabbed while others were only shot.”
Naidu said it is alleged that the house is a drug post and parts of it were ransacked but it was not yet known whether anything was taken.
She said the motive for the murders is still unknown and the case is being investigated by the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation in Gqeberha.
Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major-General Thandiswa Kupiso has called on the community of New Brighton to work closely with police in identifying and speedily arresting those responsible for the gruesome murders.
