Chamber assessing damage to Walmer following violent protest

The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber is busy surveying its members in the Walmer area on the damages they suffered in last week's violent service delivery protests in the area.

In a hard-hitting statement released on Monday, Chamber CEO Kevin Hustler said the violation of employees right to work and destruction of property was  totally unacceptable.

He said damage was estimated to run into hundreds of thousands of rand in loss of turnover and wastage.

Hustler said the feedback on losses suffered to businesses in the protests would be presented to executive Mayor Danny Jordaan and the SA police services.

"We have asked the SAP to step up their visible presence and their manpower strengths to be able to ensure that the criminal element is not allowed to be pervasive throughout the area and cause the extensive damage. Also threatening people with bricks and damaging cars, totally unacceptable behaviour, it borders on anarchy in the city.

Meanwhile, Eastern Cape premier, Phumulo Masualle, said he's satisfied that the intervention by the ANC in Nelson Mandela Bay has stabilised the Metro.

Masualle led a provincial working committee to the Metro this week to assess the progress made since Danny Jordaan took over the city's reigns.

Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, Premier Masualle reportedly said that he's pleased with the progress so far, but acknowledged that challenges still remain.
