Cango Wildlife Ranch hopeful in finding missing agouti

The Cango Wildlife Ranch in Oudtshoorn has been hard at work cleaning its facility after suffering significant damage in the recent floods.

On the 4th of June the Grobbelaars River, which runs alongside the facility, broke its banks leaving staff with little time to evacuate all animals.

All animals, except one Red-Rumped Agouti, which escaped its enclosure during the evacuation process were rescued and taken to a place of safety.

Cango Wildlife Ranch says Agoutis are good swimmers, incredibly quick and excellent jumpers.

The Ranch notified Cape Nature and other relevant parties and is now asking the public to be on the lookout for the animal as it is not known if he survived the ordeal.

Agoutis weigh between 3-6 kg and grow to between 49-64 cm, with males slightly smaller than females.

It loves to eat seeds, fruits, roots and leaves.

"If you see this little guy, please take a photo and notify us immediately at 044 272 5593 / 082 709 9283. We really want to return him to his Agouti and CWR family" the Ranch said.
