The Eastern Cape Department of Health said a new generator has been delivered at the Bedford Orthopaedic Hospital as part of infrastructure upgrades being undertaken by the Department.
Communications Director, Siyanda Manana, said the generator was procured to ensure that there is no loss of life in the event of a power outage at a hospital.
He said there are critical areas that cannot function without electricity.
Manana said the Department has procured 21 generators in a bulk order to drive the down costs, whilst making sure that service delivery to patients is not compromised.
Fifteen of these have been installed at various facilities across the province to ensure security of supply.
“The total figure for the 21 generators was R21million and the rollout is still happening.
“The two contractors tasked with ensuring the installation of the generators are Techno Mobile and Montlek.
“The installation of the generator at Bedford Hospital will commence soon,” Manana said.
