Eastern Cape police said five 'bogus' traditional surgeons were arrested since the start of the summer initiation season.
Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli says the SAPS had increased resources to improve the policing of all the traditional initiation schools in the province.
He says the five were arrested as part of the police crackdown on bogus initiation schools, adding that eight criminal cases are now under investigation.
Nkholi says teams, consisting of the police, and officials from the government were monitoring compliance pertaining to traditional male circumcision.
He said the men, aged between 23 and 35, are still in custody, while a total of eight criminal cases are being investigated so far.
Meanwhile, Nkohli said there are teams in all eight districts where there are circumcision schools, comprising police members as well as officials from government departments as well as non-governmental organisations.
"The teams are monitoring compliance with the relevant prescripts and laws pertaining to traditional male circumcision," Nkohli said.
