The National Sea Rescue Institute said the body of a man was recovered on Monday in the vicinity of Kei River Mouth following an ongoing search by various role players.

NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said while a formal identification is in progress, it is believed that the body is that of a 22-year-old local man who went missing on Sunday in the water at Kei River Mouth while swimming with friends.

He said an off-duty lifeguard, on holiday in the area, had entered the water to search for the man, while NSRI Kei Mouth was also activated.

NSRI rescue swimmers, and members of Kei Watch Action Group, and SAPS responded and conducted a search but to no avail.

However, on Monday afternoon, police K9 search and rescue members, assisted by NSRI rescue swimmers, located and recovered the man’s body.

The NSRI conveyed its condolences to family and friends of the deceased man.

Police have opened an inquest docket.
