An Eastern Cape man has been arrested for allegedly being in possession of 1.7 tons of frozen perlemoen.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Norman Holtzhausen, said the 26-year-old man was arrested at a routine roadblock outside Jansenville on Sunday morning.
He says members of Graaff Reinet's police task team found 57 bags of frozen perlemoen on the back of a Ford Ranger bakkie weighing in at 1750 kilograms.
Holtzhausen says police believe the perlemoen was being transported from Port Elizabeth to Gauteng.
He says the suspect is due to appear in court this week.
While police declined to speculate on the value of the seized perlemoen, Algoa FM News believes it may be worth more than a R1m.
