Buffalo City Metro will honour the memory of slain local boxer Leighandre "Baby Lee" Jegels when it officially opens the R87 million rand beachfront Court Crescent precinct on Thursday.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane will join mayor, Princess Faku, at the long-awaited opening of the revamped beachfront area in time for the festive season.
City spokesperson, Samkelo Ngwenya, said the 24-ha beachfront area is ready to be accessed by residents and visitors.
"The project is one of the major flagship projects that we have as a Metro and it is aimed at giving the City a facelift and turning the area into an entertainment and tourism attraction as well as hopefully unlocking economic opportunities for the City," Ngwenya said.
The beachfront project, implemented by the Buffalo City Development Agency, commenced in 2020 and saw about 143 jobs being created for locals while 11 SMMEs also benefitted.

The unveiling of the project follows the completion of major road infrastructure refurbishments on Settlers Way.
Court Crescent will be renamed Baby Lee Jegels Park after the champion boxer who was shot dead in 2019 by her policeman boyfriend, Sergeant Bulelani Manyakama, who also wounded her mother, Rita, during the incident on Vootrekker Road in East London.
He later died from the injuries sustained in a car crash while fleeing the scene of the shooting.
The project opening is being renamed after the late South African boxer and karate champion, Leighandre "Baby Lee" Jegels.
