Gqebera police said a 31-year-old man was arrested after a 16-month-old infant died after sustaining a gunshot wound.
Spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg said the incident happened at around 17.50 on Tuesday in Unit 8 in Motherwell.
She said police were informed that the sister of the infant, Luhle-Lunje Mdingi, was walking in Sakhwatzha Street when she noticed the suspect with a firearm.
“It is unclear what happened, but a shot was fired, and the sister noticed that Luhle-Lunje was bleeding.
“He was rushed to the medical centre but had already passed away due to the gunshot wound,” Janse Van Rensburg said.
She said the suspect handed himself over to the police on Wednesday. in the company of his attorney.
He was arrested on a charge of murder and will appear in the Motherwell magistrate's court on Thursday.
