A commercial fisherman in Nelson Mandela Bay got more than he bargained for this week when he was bitten by a shark on board his vessel.
The crew member was bitten by the shark that had been caught in the nets of the fishing vessel during normal fishing operations off-shore of the City.
The local NSRI station commander Jonathan Tufts says they activated their duty crew on Wednesday evening and rendezvous with the fishing vessel 7 nautical miles off-shore.
The shark biting incident had taken place in the deep sea fishing grounds South of Cape Recife.
The 36-year-old fisherman had sustained shark bite wounds that had been effectively treated by fellow crew first aiders and was in a stable condition and in good spirits when he was taken into the care of the NSRI.
He was brought to the NSRI Gqeberha rescue station where EMS paramedics assessed the injuries and transported him to the hospital for further medical care.
