A member of SAPS in Gqeberha had a narrow escape after his vehicle got stuck while crossing a low-lying bridge.
Spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Rensburg says the member, who works at Motherwell, was travelling on Main Road in Kleinskool when he tried to cross the bridge.
She says the 49-year-old Sergeant was assisted by other roleplayers who tried to recover his vehicle.
The officer managed to escape from his vehicle, which got swept away.
Heavy downpours led to flash flooding in most parts of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, causing road chaos.
The member managed to grab hold of a pole and was later rescued.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says the officer lost his firearm in the incident, although his vehicle was recovered on Tuesday morning.
She says he was extremely traumatised but not injured.
