Two men who escaped from the Waainek Correctional facility outside Makhanda last year have been re-arrested in Mthatha.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli says the investigation into the arrest of five other suspects on Saturday, led them to the escapees.
He says police were looking for a silver Hyundai I-10 with suspects targeting a cellphone battery tower in the Tarkastad area,
WO Nkohli says they spotted the vehicle on the R61 about 20 km outside Komani.
He says the five occupants in the car were searched and housebreaking implements valued at over R100 000 were found.
Nkohli says they then established that one of the men was wanted for a rhino poaching incident in the Western Cape and this then led them to a home in Mthatha where the escapees were nabbed.
All seven will appear in court on various charges.
On the 18th of October 2022, seven prisoners escaped from Waainek Correctional Facility through a window in the early morning hours.
Five are back behind bars, while two remain on the run.
