ANC gearing up for fourth attempt to unseat Trollip as NMB mayor

The ANC in the Nelson Mandela Bay is gearing up for another attempt to unseat Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip.

The party's regional secretary, Themba Xathula, confirmed that the ANC applied to bring a motion of no confidence against Trollip on the 24th of May.

He said the decision was taken at a meeting at the ANC's Regional Offices on Friday.

Opposition parties withdrew six motions, including the EFF's motion to remove Trollip, that was due to be tabled at a Special Council meeting on Thursday.

The decision to withdraw was taken at a "black caucus" meeting, made up of opposition parties, after the incarceration of  ANC councillors, Andile Lungisa and Bongo Bimbiba.

"We set as an alliance and we resolved that we must continue with the vote of no confidence as such the caucus has already applied for that to happen. The ANC is taking responsibility for the recall of the mayor and we are going to put that motion as the ANC," he said.

Meanwhile, the ANC has also confirmed that recently jailed councillor, Andile Lungisa, lodged an application for leave to appeal both his conviction and sentence at the Port Elizabeth High Court.

This, after his application in the Magistrate's court, was turned down, two hours after Magistrate Morne Cannon sentenced Lungisa two an effective two years in jail for assaulting DA councillor Rano Kayser.

Xathula also told Algoa FM News that another jailed ANC councillor, Bongo Nombibaba, will also be applying for leave to appeal his five-year jail sentence for fraud.

Nombiba was sentenced to five years behind in the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court last month after he was found guilty of fraud and money laundering.

"The convicted councillors have formally lodged an appeal against their convictions," Xathula said.

He said the ANC would support both councillors.
