ANC condemns violence in PE's Northern Areas

The ANC in the Eastern Cape says it is disappointed to see violent clashes between protesters and police, turned into a war zone in Port Elizabeth's Northern areas.

ANC Provincial Secretary, Oscar Mabuyane says violence is not an option to address issues and people are asked to refrain from engaging in violence when they need attention.

He says the ANC also condemns the sluggish pace at which the Department of Education deals with matters.

Mabuyane says the issues surrounding education need to be addressed as a matter of urgency.

"We want to call upon the MEC as a political leader of the department to make sure that there are consequences. We want people to be responsible for the things that they do but also administrators must rise up to the occasion, managers must manage. It can't be right in the Department of Education every time we appoint teachers we don't pay them at the end of the month, every time we have an excuse of teachers who are not in the classroom but there are teachers who are volunteering and are being paid by parents." says Mabuyane.

Meanwhile, Education MEC, Mandla Makupula is believed to be in a meeting with stakeholder's at the department's district offices to address issues this afternoon.
