A man who was found hiding inside a manhole in Algoa Park in Gqeberha on Thursday has been arrested.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the 37-year-old man was spotted inside the drain by police officers who questioned him about his activities.
She says he tried to run away but was soon apprehended.
Colonel Naidu says a hacksaw, pliers and four meters of copper cable were found in his possession.
She says he is one of four people who were arrested by police over the last 48 hours.
Colonel Naidu says the other arrests were made in Whyteleaf Drive in Algoa Park, a known hotspot area for copper theft.
She says with the help of K9 officers Uzzi and Chucky, three suspects, all in their thirties were arrested.
The men were digging a trench causing damage to the Metro's infrastructure to the tune of about R700 000.
All the suspects will be charged under the Criminal Matters Amended Act and possession of stolen goods and housebreaking implements.
