Algoa FM News: Your most read stories for 2022


As the year comes to an end we look back on some of the biggest stories that made headlines in our broadcasting area this year. Algoa FM News compiled a list of some of the most-read stories in Algoa Country.

January 2022

The new year started with the mysterious disappearance of 45-year-old Sylvia Wittal.

The mother of two was last spoken to on the 30th of December and her vehicle was found abandoned at Sacramento in Schoenmakerskop.

An award-winning seasoned Detective -Constable Ridwaan Baatjies took over the case at the end of January.

Wittal's disappearance remains a mystery.

February 2022

In February this year, Algoa FM's Breakfast show host, Wayne Hart suddenly fell ill.

He spent 119 days in Hospital, 37 of which were in the ICU, 21 days on a ventilator and four days on dialysis; spent a further 28 days at the Aurora Rehabilitation Hospital.

Hart was diagnosed with Pancreatitis.

He returned to the airwaves on the 1st of August and his story is nothing short of a miracle.


March 2022

 

At the end of February, a young man died when he jumped off a cliff ledge at the popular Waterfall spot "Jan-se-Gat" on the Kabeljous River at Jeffreys Bay.

His identity was released to the public on the 1st of March and became our most-read story of the month.

Ewan Riding-Smith (23) also served as a youth leader at Church.

April 2022

The Humansdorp Secondary School became our most-read story in the month of April after the School Governing Body decided to close the school indefinitely as it could not function due to a myriad of issues.

This is the largest school in the Kouga Municipal Area and at the time, eight teachers still had not received their permanent letters of appointment.

The closure led to 2 000 learners sitting at home.

May 2022

In May this year, Elton Jantjies made international headlines when he was arrested at the OR Tambo International Airport shortly after landing on a flight from Dubai.

This was months before his affair with the Springbok dietitian Zeenat Simjee came to light.

According to the Statement, Jantjies was in Turkey where he spent time with his family, before returning to South Africa alone.

Jantjies was charged with malicious damage to property and the Contravention of the Aviation Act.

A month later the case was withdrawn, although Jantjies had to pay for the damages.

June 2022

On the 16th of June, 21 learners died from mysterious circumstances at a tavern in Scenery Park in East London.

The day was a public holiday, ironically, Youth Day.

On the morning of the tragedy a local resident, Mfundo Watani spoke to Algoa FM News to share his 15-year-old relative's ordeal.

The Enyobeni Tavern Tragedy made international headlines and the cause of their death remains a mystery.

The owners of the tavern have since been arrested and will go on trial in the new year.

July 2022

In July, Gqeberha residents were left shocked when a gunman opened fire at a luxury car dealership in broad daylight.

A white Toyota Corolla with three occupants drove to the service reception area of Maritime Motors and a man got out and walked towards the employee, and opened fire.

The getaway vehicle was later found on fire on Buffelsfontein Road.

August 2022

In August, a group of matric learners from two top schools in Nelson Mandela Bay shocked residents when learners were implicated in shameful acts of animal cruelty.

Matric learners from both Grey High School and Collegiate were accused of severe acts of vandalism and cruelty towards animals while celebrating their so-called '40 days'.

The drama shocked not only animal activists but the public in general.

In the end, 15 learners from Grey High School had to undergo community service and a mediation program while learners spotted on video footage from Collegiate had still not come forward at the time.

September 2022

In September a Gqeberha woman who strangled a child to death with a shoelace was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

In March this year, 25-year-old Lesly-Anne Damon's fetched the nine-year-old Quinisha Sebrand from her home in Bethelsdorp to take her for a haircut, instead, they hiked to Maitland's beach where she was ultimately killed.

After killing Quinisha, Damon left her body on the beach but later that night went to the Seaview Satellite Police Station to report the crime.

It is also the most-read story on our website for 2022.

October 2022

On the one-year anniversary of the death of Gqeberha mother Vicki Terblanche, her estranged husband was still in court trying to get out on bail.

Algoa FM News wrote an exclusive feature on Vicki and how her life and marriage unravelled in the year leading up to her death.

It was the most-read story for the month.

The feature was also the inspiration for Algoa FM News' Exclusive Podcast series called "Journey to Justice".

The podcast has been the number one downloaded crime podcast in the country since the first day of its release.

November 2022

 

In November a man from Knysna got tongues wagging when he was arrested alongside his wife for allegedly faking his death in 1999.

Robbie Smith (67) who went by the alias Chris Boshoff and his wife Alice Abigail allegedly claimed from his Old Mutual Insurance who paid out just over R1.7 million.

The couple remains in custody as their bail hearing is ongoing.

December 2022

In December 35-year-old Siyabulela Zonqo made headlines when his body was discovered in a bag.

His body was discovered by a bush dweller on the 3rd of December when he opened a bag he found lying against a wall in Grundling Street.

Zonqo had a belt around his neck and his hands were tied behind his back with another belt while his feet were bound by sellotape.

Nobody has been arrested for this gruesome murder and the motive remains unknown.
