Accused linked to Gelvan Park murder to apply for bail

Two men from Gqeberha, who allegedly killed a known gang member, will have to wait another day to launch their bids for bail.

The state alleges that 30-year-old Meikhyl Wynford and 29-year-old Enzo Kingsley, killed Cheslyn Philander in Gelvan Park in December last year.

During their appearance in the city's Magistrates Court on Wednesday, the accused' bail application was postponed because their attorney, Dries Breytenbach, could not be present.

The court was informed that Breytenbach was occupied in a different matter where other accused were being sentenced.

The bail application was remanded to Thursday.

On the night Philander was killed, police responded to a complaint of trespassing at a house in Habelgaarn Street.

He was allegedly being assaulted by a group of people.

Philander sustained multiple stab wounds and other injuries all over his body.

He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu confirmed that Philander had flouted his bail conditions at the time of his death.

He was out on bail of R20 000 for the murders of 14-year-old Kurtley Rossouw and Justin Malgas, 25, in a drive-by shooting incident in Bethelsdorp last June.

Rossouw was in the yard of his house when he was hit in the back by a stray bullet.

The teenager died on the way to hospital, while another man was also wounded in the incident.

Philander's co-accused in the two murders, Zane Geyers, made a solo appearance in the dock on Monday.

This murder case was remanded to 8 February for further investigation.

Members of the provincial Organised Crime Investigation are also still investigating a separate case of murder and attempted murder, seemingly linked to Philander's death

The shooting incident happened at the entrance to Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha in the early hours of Christmas Eve.

At the time, Naidu said the driver of a white Nissan Sani, Godfrey Jaggers, 34, and three passengers were driving from Habelgaarn Street to Livingstone Hospital at 00:30 am.

Several shots were fired at the vehicle at the entrance of the hospital, fatally wounding Jaggers.

Two other victims, a male and a female (in their 20's) also sustained gunshot wounds, while the fourth managed to run away.
