A goat in a white Ford Ranger bakkie and an abandoned firearm in Kinkelbos led to the arrest of three suspects on Monday.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli says the men are charged for their alleged involvement in a stock theft incident over 48 hours on a farm outside Alexandria along the R72.

He says that on Sunday at 11 p.m., police received a complaint about stock theft on a farm in Alexandria.

Two suspects managed to load one Boer goat into a bakkie when they were disturbed by the farm owner.

The suspects managed to flee but were pulled off the R72, where the driver escaped the vehicle and fled into the bushes.

Warrant Officer Nkohli says they found the goat in the bakkie and arrested the 45-year-old passenger.

He says on Monday morning at 7.30, they received a complaint about an abandoned firearm in Kinkelbos, near the scene where the bakkie was stopped the previous evening.

On further inspection, the second suspect, who fled into the bushes the night before, was seen climbing into a white BMW.

Warrant Officer Nkohli says information about the vehicle was circulated on all radio channels, and it was soon spotted on the M17 near Motherwell.

He says the car was pulled off the road, and the two occupants, aged 30 and 33, were arrested.

They will face charges of defeating the ends of justice and the negligent loss of a firearm.

All three men are expected to appear in the Alexandria Magistrates Court this week.
