Police have found abalone and a rubber duck abandoned on a beach in the Jeffreys Bay area, deeming the seizure a success and disruption of poaching activity along the coastline.
Captain Marius McCarthy said in a statement on Friday that members of the Kouga Abalone Task team ,assisted by the Stock Theft Unit, responded to a report of a boat being found on the beach.
He said police found bags containing abalone, diving cylinders and other equipment hidden in a sand dune.
McCarthy said they seized nearly 2200 units of abalone and equipment with an estimated value of R1.5 million.
The Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Major-GeneraL Zolani Xawuka, in welcoming the swift action, said police would continue to fight illegal activities, including poaching.
