The Hawks said that abalone and equipment worth R1.2 million had been seized during a joint operation in Gqeberha.
Spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said they seized 26 bags of abalone, a rubber duck, and diving equipment on Saturday.
She said the operation was carried out after the team received information about a rubber duck about to off-load abalone onto a vehicle.
Mgolodela said when members arrived on the scene they spotted people off-loading abalone.
She said they fled when law enforcement officers arrived.
Mgolodela said the bags contained 5,700 units of abalone and diving equipment.
She said a search is underway for the perpetrators.
