50 kids crammed into EC taxi

An eagle-eyed policeman from Patensie in the Eastern Cape arrested a taxi driver on Wednesday morning who had 50 school children in his vehicle which is licensed to carry just 15 people.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Gerda Swart, said Lieutenant Loaan Steenkamp, was on his way to work when he noticed the Toyota Qantum driving recklessly and at high speed.
She says Steenkamp noticed school children inside and immediately ordered the drive to pull over.

Swart says he was surprised to find 50 children, aged between six and 12, crammed into the vehicle.

"The driver was arrested on the spot on charges ranging from reckless and negligent driving as well as the overloading of a vehicle.  The 31-year-old suspect is due to appear in the Hankey Magistrate's Court tomorrow (Thursday)," Swart said.

Humansdorp Cluster Commander, Brigadier Neil Jantjies praised the officer and said: "the SAPS will ensure that it delivers on its mandate to ensure that the citizens of this country are living in a safe and secure environment, especially our women and children".
