While some of us may be looking forward to the upcoming elections, the thought of standing in long queues for many hours can be discouraging, causing some to dread casting their votes on May 29th.
Despite the long wait, every minute spent in line is worth it, as voting allows us to express our satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the current government.
Though the idea of long queues may be exhausting, there are ways to make the process more bearable. Here are six tips to help make your voting experience more pleasant:
Dress Comfortably: The queues at voting stations can be long. Financial institution Nedbank advises wearing comfortable shoes and clothes, as uncomfortable attire can cause pain and anxiety. Additionally, dress appropriately for the weather to avoid being too cold or too warm.
Bring an Umbrella: Not all voting stations have covered queueing areas, and unpredictable weather could leave you stuck in the rain or under the blazing sun. Due to climate change, the weather can change at any moment, so it's important to be prepared with an umbrella, according to Nedbank.
Pack Water and Snacks: Make sure to have a meal before leaving the house. Nedbank suggests carrying snacks and water to curb cravings and stay hydrated while you wait.
Take a Pen: Although pens are provided at voting stations, it’s a good idea to bring your own. After the COVID-19 pandemic, many people are cautious about sharing items with strangers.
Bring a Companion: Standing in a long queue alone can be boring, so consider taking a friend, a loved one, or a relative with you, advises the People’s Assembly.
Know Who You’re Voting For: Nedbank recommends knowing your preferred candidates before you arrive at the voting booth. This preparation will help you cast your vote quickly, benefiting both you and those waiting in line behind you.
By following these tips, you can ensure a smoother and more enjoyable voting experience.
