Zimbabwe swears in Mnangagwa as president ahead of polls next year

Zimbabwe swore in Emmerson Mnangagwa as interim President of Zimbabwe on Friday, three days after his predecessor Robert Mugabe buckled to pressure from the military, his own ruling party and ordinary citizens to step down.

Mnangagwa's inauguration at the 60,000 National Sports Stadium in the capital Harare filled to capacity ends the 37-year reign of Mugabe, 93, who had been at the country’s helm, first as Prime Minister and later President, since independence from Britain in 1980.

Mugabe, widely criticised for mismanaging what was once one of Africa’s most vibrant economies, was forced to resign on Tuesday after the army confined him to his house, his party sacked him as its leader and thousands took to the streets to demand his resignation in a tumultuous week in the southern African nation.
