Zimbabwe presidential inauguration on hold after legal challenge

Harare(dpa) - The inauguration of Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa, which was set for Sunday, will be delayed until the Constitutional Court rules on a legal challenge to the election results filed by the opposition, the country justice minister said.

Mnangagwa took over from long-time leader Robert Mugabe in November and narrowly won last month's presidential election, according to official results.

But opposition leader Nelson Chamisa filed a lawsuit on Friday, calling the results"fraudulent, illegal and illegitimate."

justice minister, Ziyambi Ziyambi told dpa that Mnangagwa's inauguration has been postponed to allow "legal due process."

The government invited several heads of state to the ceremony, with leaders from Botswana, Namibia and South Africa having confirmed their attendance.

The results of the electoral commission showed that Mnangagwa won with 50.8 percent of the vote, followed by Chamisa with 44.3 per cent. Chamisa claims he won56 per cent of votes.

The court will have to rule on the challenge within 14 days.
