World watches as Trump supporters storm Capitol Hill

CNN

US democratic processes ground to a halt on Wednesday when thousands of supporters of President Donald Trump stormed Capitol Hill.

These chaotic scenes were beamed across international news networks, showing Trump supporters breaching barricades and thronging the stairs to the building.

US president-elect Joe Biden said “our democracy is under unprecedented attack” appealing to President Donald Trump to go on national television and fulfill his obligation to call for an end to the chaos.

In a delayed address to the nation, Biden said the chaotic scenes in the Capitol do not reflect “the true America, do not represent who we are.”

He did not mince his words when he called the actions of the Trump supporters sedition and an insurrection, urging “this mob to pull back and let democracy go forward.”

US Senators were meeting on Wednesday to certify the outcome of the Presidential election, but, what the President-elect referred to as a “sacred ritual” came to an abrupt halt as Trump supporters broke windows and tried to storm the Senate Chamber.

They were evacuated amid reports of a woman being shot in the chest and a police officer also being injured in some of the chaotic scenes outside.

Images of security officials with guns drawn were also shown on networks, while the Washington Post showed images of pro-Trump protesters trashing the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, “flipping over tables and pulling photos off the walls.”

President Trump, after earlier addressing a rally of his supporters, later posted a video in which he once again claimed that the election “had been stolen” but urged his supporters to go home.
