England’s record goalscorer Wayne Rooney has been charged with drink-driving and will appear in court later this month.
Cheshire police confirmed local media reports to dpa that Rooney was arrested in the early hours of Friday.
The 31-year-old Everton striker retired from international duty last month after turning down the chance to return to Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
Rooney will appear in at Stockport Magistrates’ Court on September 18.
England faces Malta in World Cup qualifying later Friday.
