A massive explosion shook Lebanon's capital Beirut on Tuesday afternoon blowing out windows and destroying buildings causing widespread damage.

Video footage of the dramatic explosion has gone viral on social media showing what can only be described as something out of a scene from a movie.

At least 10 people have been confirmed dead with the death toll expected to rise.

Hospitals have been told to prepare for mass casualties.

The explosion, which took place near the port of Beirut reportedly happened at a factory where fireworks are stored, sending a massive plume of black smoke into the sky.

Several people interviewed by international broadcasters said the blast shattered windows in buildings and homes several kilometres away, with one report saying it was also felt in the mountains around the capital.

Videos posted on Twitter show the extent of the devastation in and around the Beirut port and surrounding areas.

Hundreds of people are flocking to already overcrowded hospitals.

This is a developing story.
