The UN's top court will hand down a much-awaited landmark ruling on Friday in the case against Israel over alleged genocide in Gaza

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague could potentially order Israel to stop its military campaign in Gaza, sparked by the unprecedented Hamas attack on October 7.

The case drew international attention to the South African delegation of legal experts in the case concerning the application of the Convention on the Prevention of Punishment of Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip.

The judgment will be broadcast live at 1 pm on Friday.

Judge Joan E. Donoghue, the President of the Court, will read the Court’s Order.

On 29 December 2023, South Africa filed an Application instituting proceedings against Israel concerning alleged violations by Israel of its obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

In its Application, South Africa also requested the Court to indicate provisional measures to "protect against further, severe and irreparable harm to the rights of the Palestinian people under the Genocide Convention" and "to ensure Israel’s compliance with its obligations under the Genocide Convention not to engage in genocide, and to prevent and to punish genocide".

Meanwhile, Israel was firm in their response to South Africa

One legal advisor for Israel's Department of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Tal Becker argued that South Africa did not put enough emphasis on the events of October 7th
