Tokyo Sexwale withdraws from FIFA presidency race

South Africa’s Tokyo Sexwale withdrew from the race for FIFA presidency shortly before voting began, leaving four candidates, in Zurich, on Friday.

Sexwale’s withrdrawal leaves Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein, Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, Gianni Infantino and Jerome Champagne up for the top position at FIFA.

Sexwale made a short speech before voting began, when he announced his intention to withdraw.

“I am prepared to serve under the next president. My campaign is suspended as of now. I thank you,” said Sexwale.

“I never even dreamt I would be a FIFA candidate, none of us thought we’d be here. We’re here today because a president needs to be elected. For me, if its any of the other four candidates, it is a party.

“Our house is under attack. Lets stay together, hold the line. The world out there thinks this is the end of FIFA.” – African News Agency (ANA)
