The Hawks have announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with a cash-in-transit robbery in Kwamagxaki in Gqeberha in March.
Spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, said the 50-year-old man was arrested on Thursday by members of the Gqeberha-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation team of the Hawks.
She said the arrest relates to the robbery of a G4S security officer in Kwamagxaki on 28 March.
Mgolodela said that on 28 March a G4S vehicle stopped at the back entrance of Quick Spar, Gqalo Street, KwaMagxaki, Gqeberha to collect money.
She said one officer went inside to collect the money while the other remained behind in the vehicle.
"On his way back, the guard with the trolley bag was allegedly accosted by four to five unknown suspects when he reached the G4S armoured vehicle. The guard was reported to have been robbed of cash to the value of R60 000 and his service pistol with rounds of ammunition," Mgolodela said.
The suspects fled the scene in a Nissan NP 200 bakkie which was found abandoned shortly after the incident.
Mgolodela said following an intensive investigation, the suspect was arrested at his residence in Joe Slovo informal settlement and according to her "clothing worn at the crime scene on the day of the incident was recovered at his premises".
The suspect will appear in court soon while the investigation continues.
