The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) says South Africans currently stuck in Afghanistan are receiving consular assistance.

DIRCO Spokesperson Clayson Monyela says the High Commission based in Islamabad in Pakistan are in contact with several SA nationals based in Afghanistan to ensure their safety and provide the necessary consular assistance.

The South African Government has taken note of the unfolding situation in Afghanistan and is particularly concerned by the plight of thousands of displaced Afghani’s seeking safety and security amid the deepening crisis in the country.

The South African Government called on the authority in power to ensure that the rule of law, human rights and safety of all Afghans and foreign nationals alike are protected.

US soldiers systematically started to withdraw their troops from the country after two decades of fighting the Taliban.

It took the Taliban a week to take over control of the country that led to the President stepping down and fleeing the country.

US President Joe Biden addressed his nation on Monday where he promised to end America's longest war.

Biden said the main mission of the US Military now, was to get their people and allies to safety as quickly as possible.
