South Africans arrested in Tanzania for ‘promoting homosexuality’

Two South Africans are being held and interrogated by Tanzanian police in the capital Dar es Salaam for allegedly promoting homosexuality.

AP reported late Thursday that the two were part of a group of 12 men, including a Ugandan and 9 Tanzanians who were arrested at a hotel in the capital as the police gather evidence in preparation for arraigning the suspects to face criminal charges in court.

Homosexuality is criminalised in Tanzania under a colonial-era law banning sex acts “against the order of nature.”

The authorities from the East African country are cracking down on the activities of LGBT people, even ordering clinics to stop offering services to homosexuals.
