German police have made several arrests in connection with the theft of a giant gold coin from a Berlin museum earlier this year, investigators said, as a number of flats in the German capital were raided.
Police confirmed a report by Die Welt newspaper which said the raids in the central district of Neukoelln were an effort to secure potential evidence. There was no immediate news on the whereabouts of the coin.
On March 27, thieves broke into the Bode Museum in central Berlin and stole a 100-kilogram gold coin known as the “Big Maple Leaf.”
Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2007, the coin has a face value of 1 million Canadian dollars (745,000 dollars).
The raids are continuing, police said.
