The Department of International Relations says it will be providing consular services to a South African man sentenced to death in Malaysia for drug trafficking.
Deon Cornelius of Johannesburg was sentenced on Thursday, on his 29th birthday.
He was arrested in October 2013 at Penang airport after being found in possession of methamphetamine or Tik.
International Relations Department spokesman Nelson Kgwete says his case will automatically be referred for Appeal.
He says while the Appeal's process is underway the South African government cannot intervene.
Kgwete says the South African High Commission in Kuala Lumpur will closely monitor the events over the next few months.
