Veteran British actor Roger Moore died at the age of 89 on Tuesday “after a short but brave battle with cancer,” his family said.
“With the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father, Sir Roger Moore, passed away today,” his three children said in a statement via Twitter. “We are all devastated.”
Moore died in Switzerland, the family statement added.
Moore is best known for playing James Bond in “Live and Let Die,” “The Spy Who Loved Me” and five other films about the glamorous master spy.
He rose to fame in the 1960s in British television action series “The Saint” and “The Persuaders,” playing similar characters to Bond.
“We know our own love and admiration will be magnified across the world, many times over, by people who knew him for his films, his television shows and his passionate work for UNICEF, which he considered his greatest achievement.”
Moore had worked as an ambassador for UNICEF, the UN children’s organization, since 1991. He was knighted at Buckingham Palace in 2003 for more than a decade of work promoting awareness of issues affecting children worldwide.
