New Zealand cat asked to sign up as voter

Auckland (dpa) – A cat in Auckland has received an official letter inviting it to register as a voter, much to its owner’s surprise.

Tiana Lyes was initially bewildered after opening the letter addressed to her cat Chairman Meow, not sure why he had been singled out for the responsibility usually reserved for humans, but put it down to a recent change of address.

A spokesperson for the Electoral Commission, the government department responsible for elections, said an automatic letter is sent to all names listed on change of address forms and slip-ups occasionally occur.

Not that Chairman Meow is likely to care – he is still missing after the move across Auckland and his owner is hopeful the publicity might flush him out.

“Chairman has been missing for about two weeks now. He’s probably between our place in Henderson and our old one in Te Atatu South. We have hope that he’s still exploring – a couple neighbours have said they have seen him in the area,” Lyes told Stuff.

The cat is named after former Chinese leader Mao Zedong.
