Namibia's best hope of a medal at the Rio Olympics has all but been lost. Namibia's flag bearer at the Games, boxing champion Jonas Junias Jonas, was arrested at the Olympic Village in Rio on Monday for alleged sexual assault.
The 23-year-old boxer was Namibia's only medal winner of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Sheefeni Nikodemus, the sports editor at the daily newspaper, The Namibian, told AlgoaFM news that the news of Jonas' arrest had been met with huge disappointment by all Namibians. "There really is a lot of anger, also with the way that our National Olympic Committee has handles the issue. We just learned in the past few days that the language barrier was one of the reasons that his initial bail application failed"
He says there is a feeling amongst Namibians that it was a set-up.
Jonas, who was supposed to fight on Thursday evening, was given a new legal team to help with a new bail application.Another boxer from Mexico was arrested on Friday and will remain behind bars while the investigation continues, therefore he will not be able to fight.
Nikodemus says it looks like Jonas will suffer the same fate.
