Mother of seriously injured PE toddler found

Port Elizabeth police have tracked down the mother of a two-year-old girl who was admitted to hospital last week with serious head injuries.

Police spokesperson Captain Andre' Beetge, said it is alleged that the 24-year-old woman left the child in the care of a friend while she visited her family when the child, known as Mazi, had an epileptic seizure.

He said she allegedly sustained serious injuries when she fell on her head during the episode.

Beetge said the mother’s 22-year-old friend then took the child to the Motherwell clinic from where she was rushed to Dora Nginza Hospital in serious condition.  The child’s mother had visited her in hospital.

He said, however, that the attempted murder investigation by the Motherwell Cluster Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit is still continuing but no arrests have been made.

“The condition of the two-year-old girl remains critical and she is still on a life support system.”
