Washington (dpa) – A man who served 23 years in jail after being wrongfully convicted of a double murder was set free Friday in the US state of Kansas, local media reported.
Lamonte McIntyre, who was arrested when he was 17 and tried when he was 18, had been given two life sentences for the murders of two men who were shot while sitting in a blue Cadillac in Kansas City, the Kansas City Star reported.
McIntyre was convicted despite a lack of physical evidence tying him to the crime and despite alibis provided by his family that he was at home on the day of the murders, The Star said.
A request for McIntyre’s exoneration included allegations of misconduct and questions of bias during the original trial.
