Magnitude-5.7 quake hits New Zealand

Wellington (dpa) – A magnitude-5.7 earthquake hit the New Zealand city of Christchurch Sunday but caused no major damage, Radio NewZealand reported.

The quake struck at 1:13pm (0013 GMT) 15 kilometres east of the city at a depth of 15 kilometres, Geonet said.

The quake was felt between the country’s largest city Auckland on North Island and Dunedin on South Island.

There were reports of minor injuries, according to Canterbury District Health Board chief executive David Meates.

Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel said all major roads in the city were okay but some water pipes had burst. She praised the city’s new infrastructure for the limited damage.

The tremor caused a cliff to collapse.

Power cuts affected 500 hundred homes, predominantly in the city’s north-east, and another 100 on the Banks Peninsula, the report said.

A magnitude-6.3 quake on February 22, 2011 killed 185 people and caused widespread destruction in the South Island city.
