A Lion Air Boeing 737 Max 8 with 189 passengers and crew on board, crashed into the sea off the Indonesian coast, shortly after take-off from Jakarta on Monday morning.
According to media reports, and the country's search and rescue agency, the aircraft crashed into the water about 30 to 40 metres deep.
Spokesperson Yusuf Latif told AFP that they were searching for the remains of the plane.
Earlier, Lion Air said it had lost contact with a passenger jet flying from Jakarta to an island off Sumatra.
Several photographs are circulating on social media where debris and parts of the wreckage have been found floating in the ocean.

Sutopo Purwa Nugroho, who is part of the Indonesian Board of Disaster Management is currently on the scene where personal belongings were found floating in the ocean.
