Addis Ababa (dpa) – The death toll in a landslide at a waste dump near the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa has risen to 50, officials said Monday.
The accident at the large garbage disposal area occurred on Saturday, burying makeshift houses and concrete buildings.
More bodies were found at the site, while one victim died in hospital, raising the previous toll of 46.
Officials did not say what had caused the accident, which residents attributed to the garbage area having been too full.
Known as Koshe, Amharic for “dirty,” the landfill has been used as a dumping ground by Addis Ababa residents for more than 50 years.
A funeral ceremony was due to be held for some of the victims on Monday.
