A Kenyan plane taking off from Manda Airport, Lamu County, in the south-east was forced to abort take-off after one of the plane’s tyres got stuck in a pothole on the runway.
Nobody was hurt in the weekend incident but the 36 passengers were forced to disembark from the flight before engineers and other airport staff were called and forced to dig the plane’s left tyre out of the pothole using shovels, the East African reported.
The plane was about to take-off but it was a bit difficult. The pilot had to stop abruptly especially after realising that one of the plane’s tyres was stuck in a huge pothole on the runway.
Engineers and airport staff had to be called and assisted in pushing the plane out and parked it at a safer location on the runway from where it was finally able to take-off safely.
Following the incident travel agencies and tourism officials called on the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to take urgent steps to upgrade the runway.
In 2017 Kenya Airways’ low-cost airline Jambojet suspended flights citing dilapidated conditions with the airline asserting that it was difficult to take off due to the bad condition of the taxiway and runway.
