United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Rhodes University Professor Tebello Nyokong as a member of a High-level Panel to advise on the organisational and operational aspects of the proposed Technology Bank and Science, Technology and Innovation Supporting Mechanism dedicated to the least developed countries.
Prof Nyokong is the only professor in South Africa to be appointed to the panel.
The Panel members include five women and five men from least developed countries and their development partners from the North and the South.
The Secretary-General has asked the High-level Panel to prepare practical recommendations which can provide a strong impetus to accelerating structural transformation and sustainable development of these Least Developed Countries.
Professer Nyokong said it was a huge honour to be appointed to the panel and that she hoped to become meaningfully involved in mechanisms for establishing a science and technology base on the African continent.
