French corporate groups for luxury brands such as Gucci, Saint Laurent and Dior have agreed to size and health standards for models representing their products.
According to luxury groups Kering and LVMH, casting agencies will be required to find female models of a French size 34 or larger and male
models of size 44 or higher, the groups said in a statement on Wednesday.
According to online fashion retailer ASOS, a size 34 in France corresponds with an 81.5-centimetre bust, a 62.5-centimetre waist and an 86.5-centimetre low hip.
Additionally, models will be required to present a certificate of health that is less than six months old.
France has already reacted to the ongoing debate about model health, with a law going into effect earlier this year requiring medical
certification for professional models.
“We hope to inspire the entire industry to follow suit, thus making a real difference in the working conditions of fashion models industry-wide,” said Francois-Henri Pinault, chief executive of luxury group Kering.
Additionally, the guidelines prevent models below the age of 16 from depicting adults in photo shoots or fashion shows.
