Exiled #ThisFlag movement leader and cleric Evan Mawarire has been arrested on Wednesday, just after he landed at the Harare International Airport.
Mawarire, who led protests in Zimbabwe last year calling for President Robert Mugabe’s administration to provide the promised 2.2 million jobs during the ruling party Zanu PF’s campaign trail towards the 2013 parliamentary and presidential elections, was arrested by State security agents on Wednesday afternoon.
He had been in exile in the United States since mid-last year. His lawyer Harrison Nkomo confirmed Mawarire has been arrested upon arrival.
“He arrived at the airport and was immediately arrested,” he said, adding he was yet to see Mawarire.
Before going into exile in the United States, Mawarire led a series of protests against the government using social media.
He was arrested last year, as the State alleged he had incited the public into waging violent protests.
