A deer weighing 250 kilograms crashed through a glass door into a funeral parlour in Melbourne, smashing furniture and equipment before being put down, it was reported Friday.
The deer caused more than 100,000 Australian dollars (79,327 US dollars) in damage as it ran riot inside the building for 20 minutes,
the broadcaster ABC reported.
The sole worker present at the time saw it run into a small room and slammed the door shut on the rampaging animal.
Six police officers arrived but refused to let the animal out of the room until Rangers arrived two hours later. The deer was put down because of its injuries.
The owner of the funeral parlour in the outer eastern suburb of Ringwood, James MacLeod, said the deer appeared to have been already injured when it broke into the funeral parlour and may have been hit by a car.
“It was bleeding and it’s like a horrific crime scene in here,” he told the ABC.
National Parks Association estimates there are a million feral deer in the state of Victoria, and some wander into populated suburbs to feed on lawns.
