Concern growing over kidnapped SA photo journalist in Syria

There is growing concern over the fate of South African photographer Shiraaz Mohamed who was kidnapped in Syria last week.

Mohamed was on assignment for aid organisation Gift of the Givers when he was taken by an unknown group of men on Tuesday as he was heading back towards the Turkish border.

According to reports, Gift of the Givers was informed that the car transporting Mohamed and other staffers was stopped as it passed the Al Hilal hospital.

They were moved to an undisclosed location where they were questioned.  Gift of the Givers said that the other staffers were released and that Mohamed would be released in a few days, but he has not been seen since.

The Department of International Relations said officials were in contact with their Syrian counterparts to establish what led to the kidnapping of the South African journalist in the war-torn country.

Department spokesperson, Nelson Kgwete, said earlier that there had been no contact with Mohamed.

"We are going to make sure that we work with the authorities in Syria to make sure that we establish all relevant information related to the kidnapping and also establish the location where he is being kept," Kgwete said.
