London (dpa) -  Police are investigating a firearms incident near the British parliament in central London’s Westminster district, now considered to be a "terrorist incident".

According to Sky News a car crashed into the metal railing at Parliament.  A man, armed with a knife got out and confronted police in the parliamentary precinct where he reportedly stabbed a policeman.

He was then shot by the policeman’s colleagues.  Several other people were also injured but full details are still expected, according to Sky News.

British Prime Minister, Theresa May, who was in Parliament, was whisked to safety.

The White House has also confirmed that US President, Donald Trump, had been briefed on the incident.

Metropolitan police said earlier that they were aware of reports of an incident at Westminster.

The leader of the Commons, the lower house of parliament, suspended business following a “serious incident”.

News organisations were reporting that several people may have been injured.
